Rayna James  (Connie Britton): the reigning queen of country music...she still has a mainstream sound, but her songwriting is more mature and thoughtful than perhaps something Juliette would write.

Story Plot- The Reigning queen of country has been on top for more than two decades but has started to see her sales decline with the rise of a new generation of stars. Mother of two, married to Nashville mayoral candidate Teddy Conrad and daughter of powerful Nashville businessman Lamar Wyatt.

Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere): the pop princess…although we will learn that she does have writing talent, she is mostly concerned with singing the next big hit.  Her country pop sound is usually sassy and always has a great hook.

Story Plot- The other lead in Nashville is essentially Taylor Swift’s evil twin: a cunning pop sensation looking to take Rayna’s place atop the country music heap-and possibly steal her bandleader in the process.

Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) - the old school songwriter…his songs are thoughtful/poignant, and honest.

Story Plot- Ryana’s longtime bandleader is also a former flame, and a skilled songwriter – though Ryana’s never cut many of his tunes because, as he admits freely, they’re all about her.

Avery Barkley (Jonathan Jackson ): alt-country punk…though he will morph into a Brantley Gilbert/Dierks Bentley-type artist, right now his country sound is different and edgy.

Story Plot- Scarlett’s boyfriend gets little screen time in the pilot, but viewers learn he has a wandering eye (after a r un-in with Juliette) and describes his music as :alt-country punk), but more cerebral.

Scarlett O’Connor (Clare Bowen): folky singer-songwriter…she is just now learning her talent as a singer and songwriter so her music is innocent, yet honest and very poignant.  Her sound is more in the folky vein which gives her distinction.

Story Plot-  A waitress at the Bluebird Café, Scarlett can’t play a note and has never sung on stage, but quickly learns her poems can make for fantastic songs once she teams with musician Gunnar Scott.

Gunnar Scott (Sam Palladio): singer-songwriter but w/ a deep sense of Country roots, a younger version of Deacon.

Story Plot- The budding songsmith spends his nights either running sound at the Bluebird or playing classic country tunes at the honky-tonks, but that may soon change, given some promising demos and a new musical partnership with Scarlett.

Synopsis:   A compelling new TV series, written by one of Hollywood's most respected film writers/directors, focuses on that very significant human gesture: the connection between individuals and how we are all interconnected in ways not even known to us. Taking place in one restaurant, each week we eavesdrop on a new coupling, with one character from the previous episode sitting down in conversation with someone new from his or her life. We witness two distinct moments from each person's world, following these threads of connective tissue through each episode all the way to our logical yet unexpected season finale.
